If you get the following or similar error on Ubuntu 14.10 OS when your execute command apt-get update (error output could be different because when you use x64 or x86 OS),

[email protected]:~# apt-get update
Ign http://archive.ubuntu.com utopic InRelease
Ign http://archive.ubuntu.com utopic Release.gpg
Ign http://archive.ubuntu.com utopic Release
Err http://archive.ubuntu.com utopic/main amd64 Packages
  404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.152 80]
Ign http://archive.ubuntu.com utopic/main Translation-en
W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/utopic/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.152 80]

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

It means the command execution is failed because Ubuntu changed repository server address.
On this case the cause is ended Ubuntu 14.10 support (until 23rd of July, 2015).

1. We have to update sources.list file using the following command

  editor /etc/apt/sources.list

2. You should find the following line inside

  deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu utopic main

This line should be changed to:

  deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu utopic main

3. Save modified file by pressing CTRL+X, to confirm press 'Y' and again press ENTER.

Done!
Now execute apt-get update command once again.
